The communal area and the hill on which now stands the capital were densely populated as the Chiana Valley, already during the Villanovan and Etruscan.
The area fell under the rule of Rome in the first century BC. A Roman contingent under the command of the consul Lucius Licinius Lucullus, he settled on the hill where now stands the village and here he founded a castrum, which, in honor of the consul, was renamed Lucinianum.
The geographical location made the town a crossroads between the cities of Arezzo, Siena and Perugia. In fact, the three cities vied repeatedly Lucignano, after being a free commune, was first taken to Arezzo and Perugia. The past is still visible in Perugia coat of arms, which in fact consists of a winged griffin.
The decline of Arezzo, after the defeat of Campaldino nel1289 against Florence and Perugia progressive subjugation of the Papal States, favored in the fourteenth century expansionism of Siena, which occupied Lucignano. The country was equipped with a large wall and a turreted fortress in defense of the city. Control Sienese lasted until 1554, when Florence conquered Siena and its territories. As in all cities Medici Fortress was built, but was also continued urban development, giving Lucignano a typically late Middle Ages that still has today.
